A group of 40 students from a university in Taichung, Taiwan “stole” water from the Yellow River yesterday, a souvenir to remember their summer visit to Shaanxi province, Northwest China.

The Chung Hsing University students arrived in Shaanxi last Monday for a nine-day visit.

“It’s such an eye-opening trip! We are taking photos of every cuisine we taste, every place we go and every person we meet here,” Yen Yuchun, student leader of the team, told the Global Times yesterday.

She was ashamed to admit all she had known about the mainland was gleaned from media coverage. That’s why she was shocked to see people swimming in the Yellow River yesterday.

“I learned that the Yellow River supports numerous people on both banks, yet it surprised me to see people are actually swimming over there.”
