Hints of a crackdown on 'vulgar' TV aimed at dating shows and 'dirty' comic

A survey conducted on ifeng.com Tuesday showed that 84 percent of 136,000 Internet users think Xiao Shenyang's performance was vulgar.

In June, the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television forbid matchmaking programs that hype decadent topics, and demanded that TV producers be cautious about outspoken participants.

Some dating shows like "If You Are The One" and "Run to Love" were canceled. Ma Nuo, a 22-year-old model from Beijing who appeared on "If You Are the One," has been reportedly banned from showing up on TV after her remark, "I'd rather cry in a BMW than laugh on the backseat of a bicycle."

Hu Xingdou, a professor at Beijing Institute of Technology, told the Global Times that the crackdown would not be a "moral movement", but a move to restore traditional values.

"The reason why a comedian like Xiao Shenyang is popular is because his performance somehow matches Chinese culture," Hu said. "People care more about eating, drinking and having fun, not politics."

Hu said he hopes the "moral movement" will not become too intense; otherwise, it might lead to a backlash.
