A power glitch that was followed later by the collision of two trains on the tracks of Shanghai's metro Line 1, stranded thousands of passengers for up to four hours Tuesday.
No one was injured but the cause of the incident has not been disclosed yet.
The failure occurred around 5:50 am Tuesday, and brought trains to a halt between South Shaanxi Road and the People's Square stops for over an hour.
Just before operation was about to be restored at about 7 am, two trains collided on the same route and Line 1 was shut down completely, Shanghai Metro said on its website.
Line 1 service resumed around noon and 80 buses were dispatched to assist the commuters, but the accident sparked an uproar among the delayed passengers. An office worker complained to easttoday.com : "How am I supposed to explain my being late to my company."
Ying Wei, vice director of the Shanghai Railway Operation Management Center of Shentong Metro Company, told Shanghai Evening News that passengers refused to leave the accident train and demanded an explanation, which delayed the operator's rescue process.
