Peking University, one of the most prestigious universities in China, will recruit students that are recommended by high school headmasters next year, the university's office of enrollment announced Sunday.
According to the office, the recommendation policy is available in 13 provinces and municipalities, including Beijing, Tianjin, Heilongjiang Province and Xinjiang (Uygur Autonomous Region), etc. The headmasters in those cities and provinces have the right to recommend outstanding students and students with special gifts to the university, according to local media.
High school headmaster's recommendations should be in written form and the university should assess the material to judge whether the candidates are qualified.
Cheating is not allowed and the university will post information of both the headmasters and students online for a week after the recommendation.
The recommended students won't become qualified candidates until they pass a round of interviews held by the university. Those who get through this process have an extra 30 points added to their College Entrance Exam scores.
Cao Li, an official with the Beijing Institute of Education told the Global Times that she thought the plan was a good idea, as students who want to go to Peking University but perform poorly in the College Entrance Exam still have the opportunity to enter Peking University.
