7th flu fatality
The Chinese mainland Monday reported its seventh fatality from A(H1N1) flu, after a person in Central Hunan Province died.
The patient, a 14-year-old middle school student in Changning City, died of cerebral hemorrhage, cerebral hernia and respiratory failure Saturday after nearly one month of medical treatment, according to a spokesman with the Hunan Provincial Public Health Department.
The student was first treated for a fever on October 2 and developed hepatic and renal insufficiency five days later when he was tested A(H1N1) positive, the spokesman said.
'Zero' chance to live
Authorities in Sichuan Province said Monday that the two Russian climbers who went missing after an avalanche trapped them in snow, have "virtually zero" chance of survival after five days but they plan to keep searching for them.
The province mountaineering association secretary general Lin Li said rescuers failed to reach the site, which is 5,100 meters above the sea level on the Camel Park of the Siguniang Mountain, because all paths were blocked after a two-day snow storm.
Four groups comprising approximately 30 rescuers were still 1,000 meters from the site, he said.
The two Russians went to the scenic site October 20 with two other adventurers.
14 die in bus plunge
Slippery roads and poor driving were blamed for a road accident that killed 14 people and injured 40 others in North China's Shanxi Province Friday, local police said Monday.
The accident happened when a bus with 54 people traveling between Hebei Province and Taiyuan, Shanxi's capital, plunged 50 meters into a valley while it traveled through a mountainous road in Yangquan.
An initial investigation showed that slick roads and poor driving led to the accident, said Yang Husheng, a local police officer.
The driver, who suffered a bone fracture in one leg, has been under police control.
