At least 103 people were killed and 61 others were missing in the floods and landslides triggered by Typhoon Morakot in Taiwan over the weekend, the Taiwan authorities said yesterday.

In Beijing yesterday, 18 companies donated about 110 million yuan ($12.8 million) to Taiwanese victims of Typhoon Morakot through the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS).

Companies making donations include China Minmetals Corporation, China Unicom, Bank of China and CTS Holdings.

These companies donated to help the people of Taiwan endure the typhoon and rebuild their homeland, said Zheng Lizhong, executive deputy director of ARATS.
