A standard for souvenirs featuring Mao Zedong's portrait will be implemented within the year in central China's Hunan province, the local newspaper Changsha Evening News reported on Monday.

Shaoshan, a village located in Hunan province has become an attractive tourist destination in recent years, as the hometown of the late Chinese leader, Mao Zedong.

The village, famous in China, hosted around 3.6 million tourists in 2008 and made a profit of 653 million yuan (95.98 million US dollars). Among them, the profits of souvenirs featuring Mao Zedong's portrait were up 10 percent.

However, as there is no set standard, the souvenirs are often uneven in quality. Distorted portraits and fake goods have caused many tourist to complain.

The quality watchdog of Hunan province began to constitute a standard of Mao souvenirs in June this year in order to curb the problem.

Mao Zedong, born in a farmer's family on December 26, 1893, was the founder and leader of the People's Republic of China. He is revered in China and is known across the world.
