Rebiya Kadeer, leader of the World Uyghur Congress, who has been labeled a separatist by the Chinese government, led in a march in Washington Tuesday following the riots in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region that killed 156 and wounded more than 1,000.

According to Xinhua, a crowd of about 150 protesters marched from downtown Washington to the Chinese Embassy, holding blue flags with white crescents.

The march lasted for three hours and was closely monitored by local police. There were no reports of attacks on the Chinese Embassy, Xinhua said.

Kadeer spoke to the crowd in front of the embassy, requesting a stronger statement from the US government about the alleged violence the Chinese government had done to the Uyghurs, according to AP.

Kadeer was a former business woman in China who made her fortune in the 1990s by tax evasion and fraud. She now lives in exile in northern Virginia.
