Tibetans feel quake
More than 3,000 people in Southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region felt the strong earthquake that jolted neighboring Bhutan Monday afternoon.
The quake left 11 people dead in Bhutan.
The 6.3-magnitude quake struck at 4:53 pm (Beijing time) Monday, the China Earthquake Networks Center said.
The tremor was strongly felt in the two border counties of Lhozhag and Cona in the Shannan Prefecture in southern Tibet, said Zhu Quan, director of the Tibet Regional Seismological Bureau.
At midday on Tuesday, some 265 homes were damaged, but no casualties have been reported in the Chinese territory," he said.
$4 billion recovered
China had recovered 28.63 billion yuan ($4.19 billion) of embezzled funds over the first eight months this year, the National Audit Office told the Xinhua News Agency yesterday.
Auditors nationwide had conducted investigations on 51,840 government departments by September this year, according to the authority.
DPP member jailed
Tainan's local court issued a four-month prison sentence to Wang Ting-yu, a lawmaker from Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), who attacked a visiting mainland official last October.
On October 21, 2008, a mob led by Wang Ting-yu attacked Zhang Mingqing, vice chairman of the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits, when the latter was visiting the Confucius Temple in Tainan. Zhang was injured in the attack.
Tainan's inspectors accused Wang of taking a leading role in the attack and causing injuries to the mainland official, and demanded a 14-month jail term.
The other six attackers involved in the same incident were also found guilty.
5 dead in road accident
Five people died and four were injured in a traffic accident on a highway in Southwest China's Yunnan Province, local authorities said on Tuesday.
The accident took place about 1 pm Monday in Yao'an county when a mini-bus carrying nine people veered off the highway into a ditch.
Four injured people are in stable condition, a county government spokesman said.
