The inaugural "Global Times University Students English Translation Contest" was launched at Innovation Plaza at Tsinghua Science Park on Aug. 1.
Yang Zhenbin, Director-General of the Political & Ideological Education Department of Ministry of Education, Yan Zhijian, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Higher Education Press and Director of Development Center of www.univs.cn and Zhang Yong, the Managing Editor of the English edition of the Global Times addressed the opening ceremony.
Starting from mid-August, the contest will last six months with one round of contest held each month. The first five rounds are preliminary contests in which five to 10 winners will be decided in each round.
Contestants are required to choose one source text from the prescribed ones and submit their translations to the contest committee by e-mail. The 25-50 winners of the first five rounds will then take part in the final round in the last month.
The final contestants are required to translate prescribed news items within a time limit. The selection criteria include opinions from web users, language fluency, style of translation and news reporting techniques used in the translation. The translation work will be evaluated by a panel of professionals arranged by the English edition of the Global Times, its English website and www.univs.cn.
The contest is supported by the Ministry of Education. The Director-General of the Political & Ideological Education Department of the Ministry of Education, Yang Zhenbin attaches great importance to the contest, as he believes it provides university students a broader view of the world. Student delegates at the launch said the contest builds a platform for students to exchange information with each other and enhances their friendships.
The guideline of the contest is "from the students and for the students". It aims to create good opportunities for university students to get internships. The top three contestants will get internships at the English edition of the Global Times or its English website. Qualified interns can get a fulltime job.
The English edition of the Global Times and its website together with www.univs.cn will also take this opportunity to establish a team of student correspondents. They will report university students' lives in their own eyes in English.
The Global Times University Students English Translation Contest will help post-secondary students to know more about domestic and international affairs and social issues. Hopefully, by offering them internship opportunities, their enthusiasm for learning English can be inspired.
