NPC session agenda announced
China’s top legislature will discuss two draft laws on island protection and diplomatic agents for the first time at the ninth session of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People’s Congress (NPC), which is scheduled to run from June 22 to 27, the Xinhua News Agency reported yesterday.
The session will also deliberate the amendment to the Law on Guarding State Secrets, the draft law on the arbitration of rural land contract disputes, the amendment to the Law on Statistics and the draft amendment to the Law on State Compensation, according to an agenda made public following a meeting yesterday of the NPC Standing Committee chairman and vice-chairpersons.
Wu Bangguo, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, presided over the meeting.
Relocation process continues
People in Hubei Province who are scheduled to be relocated because of the south-to-north water diversion project will sign relocation contracts this year, local authorities said Sunday.
Some 50,000 people will be relocated next year, 30,000 more will be moved in 2011, and 87,000 more will be moved in 2012, Wang Yuanliang, head of the provincial immigration bureau, said.
Immigration from the Danjiangkou area is necessary to make way for the construction of the central route of the massive hydro project, he said.
The relocation plan began in November and the first batch of 12,000 people will be in their new homes by the end of September, he said.
Foreigner arrested for having guns
A foreign national has been detained for the illegal possession of guns, the Beijing Public Security Bureau said yesterday.
The man, known only as Tim, purchased the weapons in the United States and smuggled them into China last year, the Beijing Times reported.
He told police he planned to use them to hunt partridge at the Badaling section of the Great Wall.
Police did not reveal the man’s nationality, but said they found the guns in the trunk of his jeep after receiving a tip-off.
