Mayors swap invitations to city celebrations

Chen Chu, mayor of Kaohsiung, invited her Shanghai counterpart, Han Zheng, Saturday to visit Taiwan for the World Games, which will be held in the city from July 16 to 26.

Chen thanked Han for his help with promoting the Games – Shanghai is the last leg of her promotional tour for the event – and expressed her best wishes for the 2010 World Expo, which Han invited her to attend.
She also said she expected more exchanges with Shanghai on tourism development.

Officials to be made more accountable

A new policy on the accountability of government and Party officials was announced Friday at a meeting hosted by President Hu Jintao.

The measures are designed to combat corruption among the leaders of State-owned enterprises following numerous crises – such as the tainted milk scandal and mining accident deaths – in which there was a clear lack of accountability on the part of provincial and ministerial level officials.

Political analysts have claimed that the new law will maintain the credibility of the cadre system.

Fog kills 11 on road in Anhui Province

Eleven people were killed and 28 were injured yesterday in a series of more than 40 traffic accidents in the city of Wuhu, Anhui Province, local firefighters said.

The incidents happened early morning on the Wuhu- Xuancheng expressway and were caused by low visibility due to fog, fire officer Yu Jing said.

Seven of the 28 injured are in a serious condition, Duan Guofang, a staffer at the Xuancheng first aid center, said.

An investigation is now under way.

‘Tough’ penalties for bad drivers

Government officials in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province, found guilty of serious traffic offenses, such as drink driving, hit-and-run, and driving without a license, will have the crimes kept on their records, the Xinhua News Agency reported Saturday.

Under a new regulation to “get tough” on the lawbreakers, authorities will also inform the agencies for which the violators work.

The records of the serious driving offenses will be taken into account when assessing the officials’ work performance.
