Gay Chinese contestant goes global

Zhang told the Global Times Thursday that Andrew was selected for the Norway event among the eight participants of the Chinese contest after the Norway organizer approached him.

The eight Chinese participants were asked to vote for the best candidate a week ago, and Andrew was selected.

"I am not fighting for gay rights. I want to promote the development of the community through entertainment and hope it could positively influence people around me," Zhang said.

He believed Andrew will do well in the Norway show.

"Andrew is healthy, handsome, stylish and smart. He is one of the best candidates of Mr Gay China," he said.

Jiang Hui, editor of the gay website aibai.com, told the Global Times Thursday that Andrew's participation in Norway is inspiring.

"Participation first and competition second," Jiang said. "Andrew might have a bigger chance to attract the judges because the cancellation of Mr Gay China has drawn much attention."
