Edison Chan, the 28-year-old Hong Kong pop star whose career was derailed last year when he became embroiled in a sex-picture scandal, told CNN in an exclusive interview this week he was a victim of the affair.
“I can’t say I didn’t do anything wrong,” he said.
“I’ve admitted that I was wrong, and I wouldn’t say sorry if I wasn’t wrong. But I also believe that at the same time I wasn’t the perpetrator, and I suffered a lot.”
Pictures the singer took of himself in intimate situations with several Hong Kong actresses, including Gillian Chung, Bobo Chan and Cecilia Cheung, were leaked over the Internet early last year by a computer technician.
In February of last year, Cecilia Cheung said in a TV interview with iCable that Chan had refused to return her calls and switched off his phone after the incident came to light.
She said he was guilty of hypocrisy in the way he had tried to win the public’s forgiveness while hurting others caught up in the scandal.
Chan told CNN he had not spoken to any of the women in the photos since the scandal broke.
“I wasn’t allowed to talk to her [Cheung] at first because police told me not to while they were investigating me,” he said.
“I was the one who had to go on trial, you know. I had so many things on my mind.”
According to media reports at the time of the scandal, about 1,300 salacious images of Chan and the starlets were published online.
Sing Tao Daily reported that more than 10,000 images were found on disks and storage devices on Chan’s computer, which he had taken to a shop to be repaired.
CNN said computer technician Dicky Sze Ho-chun was jailed after being found guilty of dishonesty in obtaining and leaking the photos.
The CNN interview will air today.
