Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping on Tuesday in Beijing hailed the traditional friendly bilateral ties with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and pledged to further such relations.

"In the new era, China attaches great importance to the traditional friendly ties between the two peoples and military forces," Xi told Kim Jong Gak, member of the DPRK National Defense Commission.

The Chinese Party and government cherish the traditional China-DPRK friendship which was initiated and fostered by the older generation of leaders of the two countries, Xi said during the meeting at the Great Hall of the People in downtown Beijing.

"We always regard such a relationship a common treasure shared by the two peoples," Xi told Kim, also first vice-director of the General Political Department of the Korean People's Army.

The year 2009 marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic ties between the two countries and the China-DPRK friendship year, for which the two states held a series of celebration activities.

"Our bilateral ties has marched into a new period of development," Xi said.

China will work along with the DPRK to enhance contact and coordination, consolidate the basis for friendship, enrich the cooperation and exchange, constantly strengthen and develop the friendly ties and make unswerving efforts in preserving regional and world peace and stability, Xi said.

Kim also hailed the traditional DPRK-Chinese friendship, saying the two countries maintained close cooperation in such fields as politics, economy and culture.

The DPRK will, despite of the altering situation, take it as a unswerving stance to consolidate and promote the friendly and cooperative ties with China, and hopes to further the friendly cooperation with China in various fields, he noted.

Kim arrived in Beijing Tuesday morning for a visit as guest of the General Political Department of the People's Liberation Army.
