Senior Chinese official visits quake zone

Senior Chinese official Li Changchun visited quake-hit Yushu in northwest China's Qinghai Province Friday.

Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, visited quake-affected residents and personnel engaged in post-quake reconstruction in the area.

During the tour, Li paid special attention to the reconstruction of the cultural sector.

He went to the quake-devastated Princess Wencheng Temple and the Changu Monastery upon his arrival to familiarize himself with the situation concerning the salvage and protection of cultural relics.

He encouraged the monks there to play a positive role in the reconstruction of the monastery and other cultural facilities.

He also encouraged them to contribute to the ethnic unity and social harmony of the region.

Li also visited an elementary school, a cultural center and a television station in Yushu Prefecture.

He encouraged the students to study hard to build better and beautiful new homes.

The 7.1-magnitude quake struck Yushu in Qinghai Province on April 14, killing more than 2,200 people and flattening thousands of homes.

Tibetans comprise most of the Yushu population.
