Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang (Front) addresses the 24th National Congress of the Chinese Medical Association in Beijing, capital of China, April 24, 2010.
Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang Saturday urged medical workers to improve their service as the contribution to the reform of the country's health care system.
"Constant efforts must be made to improve the quality of medical and health care services, and to enhance our capabilities in disease prevention and control," Li told the opening session of a national convention of the Chinese Medical Association in Beijing.
Li said health care and medical professionals must work to achieve the major goals of the health care reform, which seeks to provide affordable and adequate health care services among other things.
Li, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, also urged governments at all levels to attach great importance to the work of medical and health care professionals.
"A performance-based incentive mechanism must be established to encourage medical personnel to improve their professional skills," said Li.
He said the government should inject more investment while drawing up more supportive policies to push the reform.
Established in Shanghai in February 1915, the Chinese Medical Association has more than 500,000 members nationwide.
