A knife-wielding villager set off a bomb during a local conference in Hebei Province on Saturday that left 13 participants injured including the suspect.

Zhang Hongtian, a Party member in Lintun township of Zhuozhou, which is less than 100 kilometers from Beijing, took a knife and explosive materials to the village's Party committee meeting, the Beijing News said Sunday. The type of explosives was not identified.

Zhang used the knife to attack Zhao Hongfu, the village's Party chief after a dispute at the meeting. He then detonated the explosives.

Two of 12 victims were seriously injured, the report said.

The victims were rushed to a local hospital, and most of them were in stable conditions except the two, who were still under intensive care, said a doctor.

Zhang, in his 40s, was also injured in the accident and was in a separate room at the hospital and was guarded by police.

Zhang had conflicts with other village officials, according to one conference participant surnamed Tang.

A spokeswoman for the city, told the Global Times that the local police was gathering evidence about the case and have not reached any conclusions.

The Global Times' calls to the city's police and the spokesman of the Lintun township went unanswered yesterday.

There was another violent incident yesterday.

Luo Ruzhu, a villager in Ningyuan in Hunan Province, was gunned down by the Party chief of a neighboring village with a rifle during a dispute over the property rights of a hill, the China News Service said.
