Ma elected chairman

Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou was elected as chairman of the ruling Kuomintang Party (KMT) yesterday afternoon, according to Xinhua News Agency.

His election makes it possible for him to meet with the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Hu Jintao in his capacity as KMT chairman through the communication platform built between the two parties.

Current KMT Chairman Wu-Po-hsiung, who has met with Hu, is to retire following Ma’s taking office.

Ma was the chairman of the KMT between July 2005 and February 2007
